NANDRAM BALDATH was yesterday fined $10,000 and disqualifed for three years from driving on a charge of drinking and driving.

On Saturday morning, Baldath, 37, of Debe Trace, Debe, went to the San Fernando Police Station to report a vehicular accident in which he was involved at 9 pm on Friday at SS Erin Road. WPC Cruickhank requested Baldath’s driving permit and insurance certificate. Police prosecutor Sgt Diniath Harripersad told Magistrate Rehanna Hosein in the San Fernando Traffic Court yesterday that Baldath presented an expired insurance certificate to Cruickshank. The court heard that a strong scent of alcohol was detected on Baldath’s breath. PC Alex Mohammed conducted a breathalyser test, which Baldath failed. He also failed a second test.

Baldath was also charged with attempting to induce Mohammed with an offer of $2,000 to forgo prosecuting him on the charge.

Baldath pleaded guilty to the driving under the influence charge, as well as not having insurance for the vehicle. However, he pleaded not guilty on the bribe charge. Attorney Shawn Tikkasingh pleaded for leniency from Magistrate Hosein, but prosecutor Harripersad reminded that on June 16, in the same traffic court, Baldath was fined $3,000 for driving under the influence after he failed a breathalyser test.

Hosein fined Baldath $1,500 for driving without insurance. On the drinking and driving charge, he was fined $10,000. He will spend three years in jail if he fails to pay by December 10. He was banned from driving for three years.
