A SAN FERNANDO magistrate yesterday handed down a total of $69,500 in fines for persons charged with drunk driving.
Presiding magistrate, Rehanna Hosein, in the San Fernando Traffic Court, also disqualified a number of drivers yesterday who pleaded guilty to the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Among those offenders were, Keon Dharandeo of Rousillac, who pleaded guilty to exceeding the prescribed alcohol amount by 14 microgrammes.
He was fined $5,000 or in default, nine months hard labour. Dharandeo was also disqualified from holding a driver’s permit for three years. Dharam Loorkhoo exceeded the prescribed alcohol amount by 79 microgrammes and was fined $10,000 or was ordered to serve three years in jail if he fails to pay.
Loorkhoor was arrested twice in one week for drunk driving. Nigel Ramdan was fined $14,000, or in default serve three years. He was disqualified from driving for three years.
The charges were laid by police constable Ganga Persad Sookhai, WPC Small Meena, The accused men were arrested on Saturday along the Gulf View Link Road, in La Romaine during a routine police exercise. Among them were two teenagers, ages 17. The magistrate placed them on bonds to keep the peace for one year.
